Volunteer Theatrical Opportunity
Student actors and performers are invited to participate in the Tennessee Celebration of Human Rights Day by creating a short theatrical presentation to make the audience think.
Who is invited: Students actively enrolled in a Tennessee college, university, technical school or other postsecondary educational facility.
What is being requested: We seek to bring a small group of students together from various educational facilities. Once the group is formed, it will work together to create a theatrical presentation to be performed at the Tennessee Celebration of Human Rights Day on December 10, 2019 at 6:00pm.
The Presentation: It will be 6 minutes long, a fast exploration into the basic human right known as freedom of expression. There should be divergent views about how that right should be interpreted and enacted, and the characters should end up learning something from each other. There should be no clear-cut answer at the end, but instead audience members should be left to work out their own conclusions.
Example: (Do not use this topic.) In 2017, some professional athletes chose to kneel during pre-game performances of the national anthem. Was that right or wrong, good idea, bad idea or something in between? If this were the subject of your presentation, your characters might discuss their opinions and, though they might ultimately disagree, they would learn something from each other.
What to do: The theater team is being assembled now. If you would like to apply, please fill out the form below.
No compensation: This is a volunteer activity and there is no compensation. Performers will receive a complimentary event ticket for themselves and one guest. The performance may be videorecorded for broadcast on TV or the Internet.
Dates: Applications will be accepted until Oct 20. Entrants will be notified of acceptance by Oct 30, and invited to an orientation meeting with members of the planning committee. Rehearsals will be scheduled throughout November, and the final performance will be on December 10, 2019.
